Thompson's group \(F\) is the group of piecewise-linear orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval \([0,1]\) whose slopes are powers of 2 and whose breakpoints lie in the dyadic rationals. Its natural presentation is infinitely generated, so that it shares many features usually found in infinitely generated groups; but it is also finitely presentable and was originally used in the construction of certain finitely presented groups with unsolvable word problems. The author shows that \(F\) is so ``large'' that it admits quasi-isometric embeddings into itself of \(F\times\mathbb{Z}^n\) and of \(F\times F\). As a corollary, one finds that the asymptotic cone of \(F\) is infinite-dimensional. The key technical lemma is an estimate of word length with finite generating set in terms of normal form in infinite generating set.
