Let \(D\) be a division algebra over a non-archimedean local field \(k\) of index \(2n\). Let \(K\) be a quadratic extension of \(k\) contained in \(D\), and \(D_K\) be the centralizer of \(K\) in \(D\). Let \(\pi\) be an irreducible representation of \(D^*\). Then the author shows that the trivial representation of \(D_K^*\) appears in \(\pi\) with multiplicity at most 1. This is an analogue of a theorem of \textit{H. Jacquet} and \textit{S. Rallis} [Compos. Math. 102, 65-123 (1996; Zbl 0855.22018)], who show that for an irreducible admissible representation \(\pi\) of \(GL_{2n}(k)\), \(\Hom_{GL_n(k)\times GL_n(k)}(\pi,1)\) is at most one-dimensional. The author also proves a multiplicity one result for a class of non-trivial one-dimensional representations of \(D_K^*\). The paper next turns to self-dual representations of the Weil-Deligne group, which correspond via the local Langlands correspondence to self-dual representations of the nonzero elements of suitable division algebras. The author formulates a conjecture concerning how this correspondence behaves for orthogonal and symplectic representations, which enlarges a conjecture of the author and \textit{D. Ramakrishnan} [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 105, No. 3, 259-267 (1995; Zbl 0914.11026)]. He establishes a criterion for an irreducible self-dual representation \(\sigma\) of \(W_k\), of dimension twice an odd integer over a local field \(k\) of odd residue characteristic, to be orthogonal or symplectic (the criterion is in terms of \(\det \sigma\)), and he reinterprets his first conjecture using this, to obtain a conjecture about when a representation of \(D^*\) is either symplectic or orthogonal. He also shows that if \(D\) is a division algebra of odd index over a local field \(k\) of odd residue characteristic then \(D^*\) has no irreducible self-dual representations of dimension greater than 1, and then gives a formula for counting the number of irreducible self-dual representations of \(D^*/k^*\) of dimension greater than 1 when the index is 3 and \(k\) has characteristic 0 and residue characteristic 2. In the final sections of the paper, the author defines the Shalika model for a representation of \(GL_2(D_1)\) where \(D_1\) is an odd degree division algebra over \(k\), notes that one can establish uniqueness (compare Jacquet and Rallis [loc. cit.]), and characterizes those principal series representations which support such a model. He makes a conjecture which generalizes this. Finally, he makes a conjecture concerning the multiplicity of certain one-dimensional representations in a given irreducible admissible representation of \(GL_2(D_1)\) (with trivial central character and either irreducible principal series or else square-integrable) and in the corresponding Deligne-Kazhdan-Vigneras correspondent. He then proves this conjecture for \(\pi\) an irreducible principal series or a twist of the Steinberg representation.
