The author proves the following result: Let \(\ell\) be a positive integer. Let \(D= \mathbb{F}_2[T]\) be such that \(D(0)=1\). Consider the algebraic equation \[ Tx^3+ Dx+ T^\ell= 0.\tag{E} \] Let \(\alpha\) be an irrational solution of (E) in \(\mathbb{F}_2((T^{-1}))\). Then (i) If \(| \alpha| \geq| T|^{(\ell+1)}\), the sequence of the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion for \(\alpha\) is bounded by \(| T|^{\ell+1}\). (ii) If \(| \alpha| <| T|^{-(\ell+1)}\), the sequence of the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion for \(\alpha\) is unbounded. The case for \(\ell=1\) and \(D=1\) was given by \textit{L. Baum} and \textit{M. Sweet} [Ann. Math. (2) 103, 593-610 (1976; Zbl 0322.10018)].
