    The authors investigate the existence of a Lipschitz viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \[ F(Du)= 0\text{ a.e. in }\Omega, u =\varphi\text{ on }\partial\Omega,\tag{1} \] where \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N\) is a bounded, open set, and \(F: \mathbb{R}^N\to \mathbb{R}\) is continuous (not necessarily convex). The article is divided into two parts, obtaining essentially the same results. In the first part, when \(\Omega\) is a convex set, under technical assumptions the main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the geometry of \(\Omega\) and on \(D\varphi\) for (1) to admit a \(W^{1,\infty}(\Omega)\) viscosity solution. In the second part, when the convexity assumption on \(\Omega\) is dropped, the main result shows that if \(\partial(\text{conv}(Z_F))\setminus Z_F\neq\varnothing\), there is some affine function \(\varphi\) with \(D\varphi\in \text{int}(\text{conv}(Z_F))\) such that the problem (1) has no \(W^{1,\infty}(\Omega)\) viscosity solution (here, \(Z_F= \{\xi\in \mathbb{R}^N\mid F(\xi)= 0\}\), \(\text{conv}(Z_F)\) denotes the convex hull of \(Z_F\) and \(\text{int}(\text{conv}(Z_F))\) its interior).
