    For \(N= n\) or \(m\), let \(S^{N- 1}\) be the unit sphere in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) with \(N>1\). The author studies a class of maximal operators \(Tf(x,y)\) on the product space \(\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}^m\), which is defined by \[ Tf(x,y)= \sup_h \Biggl| \iint_{\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}^m} \Omega(u,v) h(| u|,| v|) | u|^{-n}| v|^{-m} f(x- u,y-v) du dv\Biggr|, \] where the supremum is taken over all radial functions \(h(s,t)\) with \[ \| h\|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathbb{R}_+, s^{-1} t^{-1}ds dt)}\leq 1; \] and \(\Omega\in L^1(S^{n-1}\times S^{m-1})\) satisfies \[ \int_{S^{n- 1}}\Omega(u, v) d\sigma(u)= \int_{S^{m-1}} \Omega(u,v) d\sigma(v)= 0. \] In an earlier paper [\textit{L. K. Chen} and \textit{H. Lin}, Ill. J. Math. 34, No. 1, 120-126 (1990; Zbl 0682.42012)] it was proved that \(T\) is bounded on \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\), \(1<p<\infty\), provided \(\Omega\in L^\infty(S^{n- 1})\). So it would be interesting to know if \(T\) remains bounded on \(L^p\) by assuming that \(\Omega\) has weaker size condition. In the paper under review, the author studies this problem on the product space. He proves that \(T\) is bounded on \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}^m)\) if \(\Omega\) is in the space \(L(\log L)^2(S^n\times S^m)\). Thus this result extends and improves, in the case \(p=2\), the result of Chen and Lin.
