Let \(M\) be a complete Riemannian manifold and let \(w\) be a smooth positive weight function on \(M\). Let \(L:=-\Delta-\nabla(\ln w)\) be the generalized Laplacian defined by the weight function. The author obtains upper and lower bounds for the first non-zero eigenvalue of \(L\) if \(M\) is compact; if \(M\) is non-compact, the author obtains upper and lower bounds for the bottom of the spectrum. These bounds are given in terms of the geometry of the manifold and in terms of properties of the weight function. The author uses the technique of gradient estimates to obtain lower bounds and generalizes results of \textit{P. Li} and \textit{S.-T. Yau} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 36, 205-239 (1980; Zbl 0441.58014)]. The author uses a version of \textit{S.-Y. Cheng}'s comparison theorem [Math. Z. 143, 289-297 (1975; Zbl 0329.53035)] to study upper bounds.
