The idea of using the relative entropy of ergodic measures for the identification of Gibbs measures in dynamical systems has been discussed. The question of identifying be a thermodynamical potential starting from a sample sequence generated by a Gibbs measure when the grammar is raised has been addressed. The authors use two alternative strategies -- using the thermodynamic formalism for dynamical systems and a formalism which applies to a class of stochastic processes. In case of finite range thermodynamic potentials it is shown that both approaches lead to the identification of the original equivalence class of potentials in the limit of diverging observations.
