After a historical review, the authors consider the title problem in a general form, taking into account all the parameters which influence the jet evolution, including the viscosity of the fluid emerging from the nozzle and of the gas in which the jet flows, the surface tension on the separating free surface, and the gravity. The corresponding boundary value problem is solved numerically by the finite-difference method, assuming that the free jet surface is unknown. The jet stability is studied in the linear approximation by a spectral method, employing series in Chebyshev polynomials. The results obtained are presented in many diagrams and are compared with results available in the literature. An experimental verification concludes the paper.
