As linear stability analysis for finite difference schemes (by means of Fourier transformations) leads to the necessary von Neumann condition, one may ask for sufficiency of this condition. The author proves sufficiency of the von Neumann condition for stability if essentially some power of the amplification matrix \(G\) appearing is normal. This generalizes the known result that the von Neumann criterion is sufficient for stability if \(G\) itself is normal. The author specializes his results for the two-cycle MacCormack scheme for a linear 2D advection problem.
