A Sasakian manifold \(M(\eta,\xi,\varphi,g)\) is said to be locally \(\varphi\)-symmetric if \(\varphi^2(\nabla_VR)(X,Y,Z)=0\) for any \(V,X,Y,Z\) orthogonal to \(\xi\), where \(\nabla,R\) are the Riemannian connection and the curvature tensor, respectively. As a generalization of the Sasakian case, a contact Riemannian locally \(\varphi\)-symmetric manifold is defined by the same curvature condition [see \textit{D. E. Blair}, \textit{T. Koufogiorgos} and \textit{R. Sharma}, Kōdai Math. J. 13, 391-401 (1990; Zbl 0716.53041)]. In the present paper, the author introduces a new class of contact Riemannian manifolds satisfying the condition (*) \((\widetilde\nabla_{\dot\gamma}R)(\cdot,\dot\gamma,\dot\gamma)=0\) for any unit \(\widetilde\nabla\)-geodesic \(\gamma\), where \(\widetilde\nabla\) is the generalized Tanaka connection [see \textit{S. Tanno}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 314, 349-379 (1989; Zbl 0677.53043)]. After that, the author applies (*) on a Sasakian manifold and on a contact Riemannian manifold whose characteristic vector field \(\xi\) belongs to the \((\kappa,\mu)\)-nullity distribution [see \textit{D. E. Blair}, \textit{T. Koufogiorgos} and \textit{B. J. Papantoniou}, Isr. J. Math. 91, 189-214 (1995; Zbl 0837.53038)] and \textit{T. Koufogiorgos}, Tokyo J. Math. 20, 13-22 (1997; Zbl 0882.53032)], and proves the following results. a) A Sasakian manifold \(M\) satisfies (*) iff \(M\) is locally \(\varphi\)-symmetric. b) If a non-Sasakian, contact Riemannian manifold with \(\xi\) belonging to the \((\kappa,\mu)\)-nullity distribution satisfies (*), then either \(\mu=0\) and \(M\) is 3-dimensional locally \(\varphi\)-symmetric, or \(\mu=2\) and \(M\) is locally \(\varphi\)-symmetric. c) Let \(M\) be a 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold. If the standard contact metric structure on the tangent sphere bundle \(T_1M\) satisfies (*), then \(M\) has constant curvature \(\kappa=0,1\), or \(-1\).
