The authors study the stability of double-diffusive convection (solute concentration and temperature) governed by Brinkman and Boussinesq approximations in a sparsely packed porous horizontal layer. They show when Hopf bifurcation is possible, and which are the conditions for the transition from oscillatory to direct instability. Representative streamlines, isotherms and isohalines are presented; various properties are discussed.
