Introducing a collection of papers on modal logic, the author expresses his conviction that, despite the well-known philosophical doubts of W. V. O. Quine and practical scepticism of \textit{J. McCarthy} [Stud. Log. 59, 29-32 (1997; Zbl 0884.03016)], modal logics have a valuable role to play in both philosophical analysis and artificial intelligence.
