The massive Gross-Neveu model in two-dimensional Euclidean spacetime is reconsidered in order to illustrate the effectiveness of the renormalization group method. The authors advocate a simplified procedure by studying a sequence of effective actions obtained from a functional (Berezin) integral using a sequence of cut-offs at high momenta. The goal is to construct the correlations functions of the model in a more direct way so that properties like the short distance behavior and the exponential decay at long distances can be read off immediately. The authors use methods from their previous work and also rely on the general analysis of the Gross-Neveu model from 1985 by Gawedzki and Kupiainen. Still, the mass generating mechanism -- starting from zero bare mass -- remains somewhat mysterious.
