The author proves a classification theorem for line bundles on a hyperelliptic surface \(S\). Such a surface has \(b_1(S)=2\) and is an elliptic bundle over an elliptic curve \textit{B. T. Suwa} [J. Fac. Sci. Univ. Tokyo, Sect. I 16, 469-476 (1970; Zbl 0256.14014)] described these surfaces as the quotient of \(\mathbb{C}^2\) by a group of analytic automorphisms whose generators and relations can be described in a concrete manner. The method used by the author is inspired by the modern proof of the classical theorem of Appell-Humbert given by \textit{D. Mumford} [``Abelian varieties'' (1970; Zbl 0223.14022)]. This proof uses the computation of the cohomological invariants of a quotient variety in terms of the cohomology of groups. While the description of the group \(\text{Pic}^\tau(S)\) of numerically trivial line bundles on \(S\) makes no problem, the description of \(\text{Num}(S)\) is non-trivial. The difficulties are of a computational nature and are caused by the necessity of expressing the factors of automorphy in a reasonably simple form. Using his theorem, the author recovers quickly, in the final section of the paper, a number of results by T. Suwa and \textit{F. Serrano} [Math. Z. 203, No. 3, 527-533 (1990; Zbl 0722.14023)].
