The author proves a global uniqueness theorem for stationary black holes. As a basis for the proof he uses the Topological Censorship Theorem of \textit{J. L. Friedman, K. Scheich} and \textit{D. M. Witt} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 1486-1489 (1993; Zbl 0934.83030)], \textit{P. T. Chrusciel} and \textit{R. M. Wald}'s proof [Classical Quantum Gravity 11, L147--L152 (1994; Zbl 0820.53064)] that ``the event horizon of a stationary black hole in a `moment' is always a sphere'', and \textit{M. H. Freedman}'s [J. Differ. Geom. 17, 357-453 (1982; Zbl 0528.57011)] topological classification of compact, simply connected four-manifolds. Using a method based on the natural compactification of the spacetime manifold and then studying a vector field extended to that compact manifold, the author shows that the spacetime (metric and manifold topology) of a stationary black hole is unique.
