Seshadri constants are local invariants that are naturally associated to polarized varieties. In this paper the author studies these invariants on algebraic surfaces. Consider a smooth projective variety \(X\) and a nef line bundle \(L\) on \(X\). Let \(f:Y\to X\) be the blow-up of \(X\) at a point \(x\in X\) and \(E=f^{-1}(x)\) the exceptional divisor. The Seshadri constant \(\varepsilon(L,x)\) is by definition the maximal real number \(\varepsilon\) such that the line bundle \(f^*L-\varepsilon E\) is nef. -- The first result concerns surfaces that come with a fixed embedding into projective space \((L\) very ample). In this case one has \(\varepsilon(L,x)\geq 1\) at all points \(x\) and the author proves under which circumstances equality holds and which small values bigger than 1 can occur. -- The second result deals with line bundles \(L\) that are assumed to be ample. A bound on Seshadri constants is given in terms of the canonical slope of \(L\), an invariant defined in terms of the nef cone of the surface. -- Next the author studies sub-maximal curves at very general points, i.e. curves causing the Seshadri constant \(\varepsilon(L,x)\) to be below its maximal possible value at these points. -- Finally, complete results for abelian surfaces of Picard number one are given.
