      Let \(T:X \to X\) be a homeomorphism satisfying a certain suitable hyperbolicity condition of a compact metric space \((X,d)\), and let \(\mu\) be a Gibbs measure on \(X\) relative to \(T\). The main goal of the paper is to give a criterion when the spectral density vanishes. It is proved that for a complex number \(\lambda\), \(| \lambda| =1\), and a Hölder continuous function \(f:X\to{\mathbb C}\) \[ \sum_{k \in {\mathbb Z}} \lambda^{-k} \left( \int_{X} f(T^{k}x) \overline f(x) \mu(dx) -\left| \int_{X}f(x) \mu(dx)\right| ^{2} \right) = 0 \] if and only if \(\sum_{k \in {\mathbb Z}} \lambda^{-k} (f(T^{k}x) - f(T^{k}y))=0\) for all \(x,y\in X\) such that \(d(T^{k}x,T^{k}y)\to 0\) as \(| k| \to\infty\).
