A new type of fuzzy compactness, the so-called layer compactness, is introduced. The layer compactness is weaker than \(N\)-compactness [\textit{D. Zhao}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 128, 64-79 (1987; Zbl 0639.54006); \textit{Y. Peng}, Acta Math. Sin. 29, 555-558 (1986; Zbl 0616.54005)]. The author also uses it to characterize chains, algebraic lattices, and the layer compact lattice.
