Associated to a lamination of a 3-manifold by surfaces is a certain tree-like object acted upon by the fundamental group of the manifold. Geometric structures on the tree preserved by the action of the fundamental group correspond to transverse structures on the lamination and impose conditions on the lamination and the ambient manifold. For example, if the lamination has an invariant transverse measure, then the tree has a metric that is invariant under the action of the fundamental group. The author investigates a transverse structure called a transverse projective measure. He also investigates a refined type of essential lamination and studies the fundamental group of laminated 3-manifolds.
