The author uses known theoretical results to explain some recent numerical observations on the behaviour, as \(\varepsilon \rightarrow 0\), of the eigenvalues of \(A+\varepsilon E\), where the real nonnormal matrix \(A\) has a repeated eigenvalue, and the matrix \(E\) and the scalar \(\varepsilon\) are also real. The spectral radius of \(E(A+\varepsilon E-zI)^{-1}\) plays a key role in the analysis, and its numerical computation is discussed. The significance of perturbation theory for Arnoldi's method is also discussed.
