Lt \(A\) be a simple abelian surface defined over \(\mathbb{C}\). Then the endomorphism algebra \(\text{End}_\mathbb{Q}(A) =\text{End}(A) \otimes_\mathbb{Z}\mathbb{Q}\) is one of the following: \(\mathbb{Q}\), a real quadratic field, a CM-field of degree 4 over \(\mathbb{Q}\), an indefinite quaternion algebra. So, \(\text{End}_\mathbb{Q}(A)\) can neither be an imaginary quadratic field nor a definite quaternion algebra. The aim of this short note is to give an elementary proof of this fact. As a consequence one has that if \(T\) is a two-dimensional complex torus with \(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt d)\hookrightarrow \text{End}_\mathbb{Q} (T)\) where \(\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt d)\) is real quadratic, then \(T\) is algebraic.
