In this paper the authors consider a generalization of the Rudin Keisler order on the Stone-Čech compactification \(\beta\mathbb Z\) to the left uniformly continuous compactification \(\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\) of \(\mathbb R\), the largest right topological semigroup compactification of the additive topological group \(\mathbb R\). It turns out that a function \(f:\mathbb R\to \mathbb R\) has a continuous extension \(\widetilde f:\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\to\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\) if and only if it is uniformly continuous. One defines \(p\preceq q\) in \(\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\) (the previously mentioned generalization) if there exists a uniformly continuous function \(f:\mathbb R\to \mathbb R\) such that \(\widetilde f(q)=p\). Call \(q\) a successor of \(p\) if \(p\preceq q\), but not vice-versa. The points of \(\mathbb R\) are minimal in the preorder \(\preceq\), and the authors show that they have no immediate successors. In another direction the authors establish that every element of \(\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\) has \(2^{\mathfrak c}\) distinct non-equivalent successors, and that any \(\mathfrak c\) elements have a common successor. The authors also establish connections between the order \(\preceq\) on \(\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\) and the Rudin Keisler order and related orders on \(\beta\mathbb Z\) (which may be identified with the closure of \(\mathbb Z\) in \(\mathbb R^{\text{LUC}}\)), and exploit these relationships in their proof of the results cited.
