Let \(\mathcal A^2(\mathbb D)\) be the Bergman space of holomorphic functions in \(L^2(\mathbb D)\), where \(\mathbb D\) is the unit disc. Recall that for \(\phi\in L^\infty(\mathbb D)\), the Toeplitz operator \(T_\phi\) is the operator on \(\mathcal A^2(\mathbb D)\) defined as \(T_\phi=PM_\phi\), where \(M_\phi\) is the operator of multiplication by \(\phi\) on \(L^2(\mathbb D)\) and \(P:L^2(\mathbb D)\to \mathcal A^2(\mathbb D)\) is the orthogonal projection. For \(A\) a \(C^*\)-subalgebra of \(L^\infty(\mathbb D)\), let \(\mathcal T(A)\) be the (\(C^*\)-)algebra generated by \(\{T_\phi:\phi\in A\}\), and \(\mathcal R(A)\) the (\(C^*\)-)algebra generated by \(\{M_\phi:\phi\in A\}\cup\{P\}\). The main result of the paper under review is a construction of algebras \(A\) such that \(\mathcal T(A)\) is commutative while \(\mathcal R(A)\) is not (and nor is even the quotient \(\mathcal R(A)/\mathcal K\) where \(\mathcal K\) is the ideal of compact operators). Further, it is proved that for each finite sequence of integers \(1=n_0<n_1<\dots<n_m\leq\infty\) there exists a \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) such that the image \(\mathcal T(A)/\mathcal K\) of \(\mathcal T(A)\) in the Calkin algebra is commutative, while the image \(\mathcal R(A)/\mathcal K\) of \(\mathcal R(A)\) has irreducible representations exactly of dimensions \(n_0,\dots,n_m\). The main ingredient in the construction of the algebras \(A\) is the use of functions constant on horocycles (i.e.~under the identification of \(\mathbb D\) with the upper half-plane via the Cayley transform, functions depending only on \(\text{Im} z\)).
