The Shioda-Inose structure on a K3 surface \(X\) was first studied by \textit{T. Shioda} and \textit{H. Inose} [in: Complex Analysis and Algebraic Geometry, collect. Pap. dedic. K. Kodaira, 119-136 (1977; Zbl 0374.14006)] and by \textit{D. Morrison} [Invent. Math. 75, 105-121 (1984; Zbl 0509.14034)] when the group involved is \({\mathbb{Z}}/(2)\). The authors here generalize it to include all possible \textit{symplectic} finite groups \(G\) acting on a K3 surface \(X\) and also an abelian surface \(Y\) so that \(X/G\) is birational to \(Y/G\); such \(G\) on \(Y\) were classified by \textit{T. Katsura} [J. Fac. Sci., Univ. Tokyo, Sect. IA 34, 1-41 (1987; Zbl 0664.14023)] and also by \textit{A. Fujiki} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 24, No. 1, 1-97 (1988; Zbl 0654.32015)]. The authors show that an \(X\) with a generalized S-I structure satisfies \(\rho(X) = 19, 20\), and the group \(G\) in question is uniquely determined by \(X\).
