    For a bounded, polygonal region \(\Omega \subset R^n\) let \(S: \Omega \rightarrow \Omega\) be a nonsingular mapping such that there exists an invariant measure which is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure \(m\) on \(\Omega\). For the numerical computation of such an invariant measure, the authors develop a general finite element theory for the solution of the fixed point problem defined by the corresponding Frobenius-Perron operator \(P_S\). The convergence analysis shows, in essence, that, under some quasi-compactness assumption on \(P_S\), consistency and stability of the numerical scheme imply convergence. Then spectral approximation theory is used to assess the convergence rate of the method under different norms.
