An application of the dual reciprocity boundary element method to calculate magnetostatic fields in materials with inhomogeneous permeability is described. Both total and reduced scalar potentials and their normal derivatives are used. Except the permeable region all other media are homogeneous, linear, and isotropic. The partial differential equations describing the problem are transformed into an integral equation. The domain integral appearing in the integral equation is approximated by a sum of surface integrals. The method is illustrated numerically on two examples (a shielded wire and a current carrying cylindrical coil).
