      Using a linear theory, the authors investigate the wave motion of an ideal fluid on the surface of infinite rotating circular cylinder (two-dimensional formulation). The motion of the fluid is generated by gravitational (bulk) forces and (or) surface tension forces. The authors give modal analysis and derive dispersion equations. It is shown that the theory is able to describe travelling and standing waves, and to predict a phenomenon called by the authors ``inertia of standing waves''.
