If a continuum \(Y\) is the image of a compactum \(X\) under a map \(f\) which is homotopic to a constant map, then \(Y\) is uniformly path connected. Equivalently, \(Y\) is a continuous image of the Cantor fan. Bellamy asked whether for each uniformly path connected continuum \(X\) there is a continuous surjection \(f: X\to X\) which is homotopic to a constant function [\textit{H. Cook, W.T. Ingram, K.T. Kuperberg, A. Lelek} and \textit{P. Minc}, eds., Continua with the Houston Problem Book (Marcel Dekker, New York, 1995; Zbl 0813.00008), Problem 64]. In this interesting paper the authors answer this question in the negative by a counterexample which is even a plane continuum.
