A subset \(S \subset G\smallsetminus \{1_G\}\) in a topological group \(G\) is said to be suitable if it is relatively discrete, \(\overline S \subset S\cup \{1_G\}\) and the subgroup of \(G\) generated by \(S\) is dense in \(G\). The authors investigate when a topological group has or has not a (closed) suitable set. Among others, they prove that the following classes of topological groups have a suitable set: countable Hausdorff groups (while there exists a Hausdorff group of cardinality \(2^\omega\) with no suitable set), separable Hausdorff groups which are not totally bounded, metrizable topological groups, free Abelian topological groups on separable Tikhonov spaces. On the other hand, free Abelian topological groups on nonseparable compact \(F\)-spaces (in particular on the Stone-Čech compactification of any uncountable discrete space) do not have a suitable set. It is also shown that the product, \(\sigma\)-product and \(\Sigma\)-product of a family of topological groups each have a suitable set whenever all factors have such a set.
