      Let \(B^m\) be the unit ball in \({\mathbb R}^m\), \(m\geq 3\). Let \(E^m(b)=\{(w,y)\in {\mathbb R}^m\times {\mathbb R}\); \(|w|^2+y^2/b^2=1\); \(b>0\}\). Let \(r=|x|\). The equator map \(u^*(x)=(x/r,0)\) belongs to \(H^{1,p}(B^m, E^m(b))\). Let \(m_p=4(m-1)/(m-p)^2\). For \(2\leq p <m\), the author proves the following stability theorem: Theorem. \(u^*\) is stable if \(b^2\geq m_p\) and unstable if \(b^2< m_p\).
