A domain \(R\) is said to be a generalized Dedekind domain if it is a Prüfer domain such that every nonzero prime ideal \(P\) of \(R\) is the radical of a finitely generated ideal, and \(P\neq P^2\). The purpose of this paper is to provide new ideal-theoretical characterizations of these rings. The authors prove that a Prüfer domain \(R\) is a generalized Dedekind domain iff the divisorial ideals of \(R\) are precisely the ideals of type \(JP_1\dots P_n\), where \(J\) is an invertible fractional ideal of \(R\) and \(P_1,\dots,P_n\) are incomparable nonzero prime ideals of \(R\). It is shown that for any generalized Dedekind domain \(R\) the group of invertible fractional ideals of \(R\) is isomorphic to the free abelian group generated by the set of all nonzero prime ideals of \(R\), and a basis for it is given by a suitable set of two-generated ideals with prime radical.
