The author introduces a notion of vertex Lie algebra motivated from the commutator relations of vertex operators in vertex operator algebras. These Lie algebras are determined by analogues of the ``positive part'' of the vertex operators. The connections between representations of these algebras and vertex operator algebras has been established. The notion of vertex Lie algebra coincides with the Lie algebra generated by a conformal algebra a notion introduced by \textit{V. Kac} [Vertex algebras for beginners, University Lecture Series 10, AMS, Providence (1996; Zbl 0861.17017), 2nd ed. (1998; Zbl 0924.17023)]. The results are also overlapping. However, the author's work was independent of that of Kac to the reviewer's knowledge. Connections between more general twisted representations of these Lie algebras and vertex operator algebras were given in the reviewer's book [Introduction to vertex operator superalgebras and their modules, Kluwer, Dordrecht (1998; Zbl 0929.17030)]. Again this paper was independent of my results.
