\textit{J. F. Ritt} in a series of papers [ Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 21, 348-356 (1920; JFM 47.0312.01), ibid. 23, 16-25 (1922; JFM 48.0433.03) and 51-66 (1922; JFM 48.0079.01), ibid. 25, 399-448 (1923; JFM 49.0712.02)] gave a theory of composition of polynomials and rational functions with complex coefficients. In particular he characterized pairs of permutable polynomials (i.e polynomials \(f,g\) with \(f(g(X))=g(f(X))\)), determined all pairs of polynomials having a common iterate and described all polynomials \(f\) for which there exists a rational function \(\beta\) (called Boettcher function of \(f\)) such that \(f(\beta(X))=\beta(X^n)\), with \(n=\deg f\). The authors generalize all these results to the case, when the field of complex numbers is replaced by an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic \(\pi\), but in case \(\pi>0\) they have to assume that the degrees of the involved polynomials are not divisible by \(\pi\).
