In this article a cohomology theory for right-symmetric algebras is developed. Right-symmetric, or left-symmetric algebras have been studied in different areas of mathematics and physics. They are Lie-admissible algebras and contain the class of Novikov algebras. The author defines right-symmetric modules and comodules and introduces a right-symmetric cochain complex together with a pre-simplicial structure. He studies Cartan's formula, long exact sequences, connections with the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of the corresponding Lie algebra, a cup-product and does explicit calculations for the right-symmetric algebras \({\mathfrak {gl}}_n(K)\) and the half-Witt algebras \(W_n^{\text{rsym}}\) over characteristic \(p\geq 0\). The latter is the algebra of vector fields \(K[[x_1^{\pm 1},\ldots , x_n^{\pm 1}]]\) with right-symmetric product \(u\partial _i \circ v\partial _j =v\partial _j(u)\partial _i\). Its Lie algebra is the Witt algebra \(W_n\). The right-symmetric cohomology of the above algebras is computed, with coefficients in a regular module and in an antisymmetric module. Finally deformations and central extensions of right-symmetric algebras are studied. The article contains a lot of interesting material, but a part of the cohomology and deformation theory already has been developed by \textit{A. Nijenhuis} [Nieuw Arch. Wisk., III. Ser. 17, 17-46, 87-108 (1969; Zbl 0179.33204)], where the algebras were called Vinberg algebras.
