The paper deals with the condition for bifurcation of strain localization for rate-independent finite deformation plasticity within the thermodynamic constitutive framework proposed by \textit{A. E. Green} and \textit{P. M. Naghdi} [see e.g. in Carroll, Michael M. (ed.) et al., Nonlinear effects in fluids and solids. New York, NY: Plenum Press. Math. Concepts Methods Sci. Eng. 45, 161-187 (1996; Zbl 0867.73006)]. In this model, the specific Helmholtz free energy in strain space is described as a function of Cauchy-Green deformation tensor, an appropriate measure of plastic deformation and absolute temperature. The evolution equation for rate of temperature is derived from the balance of entropy. The material isotropically hardens, and evolution of plastic deformation and hardening parameter is rate-independent. The symmetric Piola-Kirchhoff stress rate is characterized by tangent matrix in the reference configuration, and the external heat supply and heat flux are vanishing. The authors derive the strain localization criterion in Lagrangian and in Eulerian formulation, from dynamical and kinematical conditions for acceleration waves, using the condition for the formation of localization band. The localization response is analyzed in terms of the strain required for localization, the direction of localization band, and the mode of localization, using a specific constitutive model for isotropic elasto-plastic materials. The authors also analyze the influence of neglecting the terms which are vanishing when small deformation formulation is used, on the localization response. The authors conclude that a false prediction of the localizations can be made when these terms are nelected in the small deformation localization criterion. A large set of triaxial loading paths is examined using a numerical procedure based on implicit integration of differential equations for temperature field, flow rule and isotropic hardening.
