    The authors study the Hyers-Ulam stability of alternative Cauchy functional equation and among others they obtain the following result. Let \((G, +)\) be a commutative semigroup and \(V \subset G\) be a weakly bounded set. If a function \(f: G \to {\mathbb R}\) (the set of reals) satisfies the inequality \(||f(x+y)|-|f(x)+f(y)||\leq \delta\) for some \(\delta > 0\) and for every \((x, y) \) in \(G\times G \setminus V\times V\), then there exists a unique additive function \(\gamma : G \to {\mathbb R}\) such that \[ |f(x) - \gamma (x)|\leq 3 \delta \quad \text{for} \;x \in G . \] If \(V = \emptyset\), then \[ |f(x) - \gamma (x) |\leq \delta \quad \text{for} x \in G . \] This result generalizes an earlier result due to \textit{F. Skof} [Stability of mappings of Hyers-Ulam type, J. Tabor and T. M. Rassias (eds.), Hadronic Press Inc., 141-151 (1994; Zbl 0844.39006)]. The authors further show that \(||f(x+y)||=||f(x)+f(y)||\) for \(x, y \in G\) is not stable in higher dimension.
