Methods for constructing soliton solutions on arbitrary background are revisited and uniqueness and existence results are exploited to obtain a short and elegant proof for the single and double commutation method. As an illustration the authors compute the \(N\)-soliton solution of the Toda and Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy.
