In this paper, the author studies the fundamental group of the complement in \({\mathbb P}^2\) of the branch curve of a generic projection of a Veronese surface, and proves that it is almost solvable, i.e. it contains a normal solvable group of finite order. More precisely, it is the extension of a solvable group by a symmetric group. The author poses the interesting question: ``For which families of simply connected algebraic surfaces of general type is the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve of a generic projection to \({\mathbb P}^2\) an extension of a solvable group by a symmetric group''? Almost solvability results in the affine case were obtained by \textit{B. Moishezon} and \textit{M. Teicher} [Proc. Hirzebruch 65 Conf. Algebraic Geometry, Isr. Mat. Conf. Proc. 9, 329-345 (1996; Zbl 0863.14010)]. The proof is carried out completely only for the Veronese embedding of degree 3; in higher degree the result is only stated. In all the cases the author writes in fact completely the ``series'' for the solvable subgroups.
