The authors offer improvements and unified treatment of several inequalities (some valid for all, others only for large positive values of the variable) involving the quotients of two shifted gamma functions and occasionally the psi function (the logarithmic derivative of the gamma function). They are applied to obtain Bernstein type inequalities for several classical orthogonal polynomials.
