This article is a detailed and self-contained exposition of the theory of irreducible reductive Howe dual pairs of the unitary group \(U_{\mathbf K} (I)=\{A\in gl(n,{\mathbf K})\); \(A^IA= \mathbf{1}\}\), where \({\mathbf K}\) is one of the involutive fields; \({\mathbf R}\) with identical involution, \({\mathbf C}_1\) and \({\mathbf C}_c\) with identical involution and conjugation respectively, and \({\mathbf H}\) with conjugation, and \(I\in GL(n,{\mathbf K})\) is a Hermitian metric. Especially, the complete list of conjugacy classes \({\mathcal H} (U_{\mathbf K}(I))\) of irreducible reductive Howe dual pairs and the partial ordering on \({\mathcal H}(U_{\mathbf K}(I))\) defined by inclusion are obtained. In order to construct Howe dual pairs, M. Schmidt adopts the general method used by \textit{C. Moeglin}, \textit{M.-F. Vignéras} and \textit{J.-L. Waldspurger} [Lect. Notes Math. vol. 1291 (Berlin 1987; Zbl 0642.22002)], however, he reformulates the imbedding arguments \(gl(l_i,{\mathbf L}_{\mathbf i})\to gl(l_1l_2, {\mathbf L})\) \((i=1,2)\), \({\mathbf L}\) is a division algebra over \({\mathbf K}\), and he gives explicit imbeddings without using tensor products. This simplifies explicit calculations and thereby he can easily deduce the complete list and the ordering. As an application to the Yang-Mills theory, the author determines the singularity structure of the orbit space of a pure \(SU(n)\) gauge theory over space-time \(S^4\).
