The first theorem gives a new extrinsic upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the the square \(\lambda_1^2\) of the Dirac operator on a compact orientable surface in \(3\)-space in terms of the mean curvature and a function \(f\) on the surface. In the second theorem, an intrinsic upper bound for \(\lambda_1^2\) is given in terms of a new invariant defined in a similar way as the conformal volume of a Riemannian surface. Moreover, upper intrinsic estimates are given for the \(2\)-torus in dependence of the spin structure. Finally, the different estimates of the eigenvalues are compared for the ellipsoid with two equal main axes and for a tube around a circle.
