Compatibility conditions for time-dependent partial differential equations are given. An infinite set of relations between initial and boundary conditions are derived which are necessary and sufficient for a solution to be infinitely differentiable. Only for smooth solutions the high spectral accuracy can be achieved. The compatibilty conditions and the convergence of the Chebyshev spectral methods are analyzed. Strategies for slightly adjusting initial conditions are proposed so that the compatibility conditions are satisfied.
