[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] User modeling is an essential element of systems which adapt to the individual. With increasing use of computers, there is an increasing need for user-adapted systems. Hence the user modeling is inherently a multidisciplinary topic, which demonstrates the Seventh User Modeling Conference held in Canada in June 1999. The papers in this volume provide a foundation for the construction of user-adapted interactive systems. The contents include 27 full papers like user models to assist system understanding; the user and drive adaption of system actions; constructing user models explicitly; building user models unobtrusively; managing user models; architectures and representations. Besides, there are 10 short poster papers, 8 doctoral consortium papers, and 8 invited presentations. The volume contains also the author index and adresses.
