This paper deals with the existence of solutions for the 2-dimensional Dirichlet problem \[ -\Delta u= \varrho^2(e^u+e^{\gamma u})\;\text{in} \Omega,\quad u=0\;\text{on} \partial\Omega,\tag{1} \] where \(\Omega\) is a regular open bounded subset of \(\mathbb{C}\), \(u:\Omega\to\mathbb{R}\), \(\gamma\in(0, 7/8)\). Let \(G\) be the Green function associated to (1), and \(H\) be the regular part of \(G\). Suppose that \(z_1\in\Omega\) is a nondegenerate critical point of \(\psi(z)=H(z,z)\), and let \(u^*\) be the solution of \(-\Delta u^*=8\pi\delta_{z_1}\) in \(\Omega\), \(u^*=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\). The author shows the existence of a one-parameter family of solutions \(u_\varrho\) of (1) which converges to \(u^*\), when \(\varrho\) goes to zero. The proof is an adaptation of the approximation method used previously by the author and \textit{F. Pacard} [Calculus of variations and P. D. E's, 6, 1-38, (1998; Zbl 0890.35047)]. It involves linearizations of nonlinear operators and the introduction of suitable functional spaces which, finally, allow an application of a nonlinear fixed point argument. In a short appendix, a possible extension of the result to the more general equation \(-\Delta u=\varrho^2(e^u+he^{\gamma u})\), with several blow up points, is discussed.
