Scaling functions in wavelet theory satisfy a refinement equation with a scaling factor \(2\). The author studies scaling functions defined by refinement equations with a scaling factor \(M \geq 2\), especially \(M\)-band scaling functions which generalize the Daubechies scaling functions. \(L^p\)-Sobolev exponents are derived under general conditions on the symbol of the equation; these are used to give regularity estimates for the \(M\)-band scaling functions.
