Let \(B\) be the unit ball in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) \((N\geq 2)\) and \(g\in C^\beta([0,1]\times [-\varepsilon_0,\varepsilon_0])\) with \(0<\beta<1\), \(\varepsilon_0>0\), such that \(g(|x|,u)\) is odd in \(u\) and \(\lim_{u\to 0} \frac{g(x,u)}{u}=+\infty\). No additional condition at infinity is imposed. The main result (Theorem 1.1) in this paper is that under the above assumptions there exists \(k_0\in \mathbb{N}\) such that for all \(k\geq k_0\) there exists a nontrivial nonradial solution in the Sobolev space \(H^1_0(B)\) (more precisely, in some subspace \(E_k\)) of the boundary value problem \(-\Delta u = g(x,u)\) in \(B\), \(u=0\) on \(\partial B\). The argument used here consists in applying the direct method of the calculus of variations to a truncated version of the original problem in some subspace \(E_k\) of \(H^1_0(B)\). An important role is played by classical regularity theorems implying that weak solutions are actually in \(C^{1,\beta}(B)\) for \(0<\beta<1\).
