    The authors study representations of \(\text{GL}_n\) over fields of prime characteristic \(p\). They explore Howe duality (for the characteristic \(0\) version see \textit{R. Howe}'s paper [Isr. Math. Conf. Proc. 8, 1-182 (1995; Zbl 0844.20027)]) for the pair \((\text{GL}_n,\text{GL}_m)\). This allows them to use the formula for the occurence of a first alcove tilting module in a general tilting module for \(\text{GL}_m\) to determine the characters of a class of simple modules for \(\text{GL}_n\). This theorem is valid for all \(p\) (in contrast with the results centered around the Lusztig conjecture). In the last section the authors consider restriction from \(\text{GL}_n\) to \(\text{GL}_{n-1}\). They prove that for the class of simple \(\text{GL}_n\)-modules in question the restriction to \(\text{GL}_{n-1}\) is always semi-simple and multiplicity free. This fact was established independently by \textit{J. Brundan, A. Kleshchev} and \textit{I. Suprunenko} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 500, 83-112 (1998; Zbl 0909.20026)] by a completely different technique.
