Let \(A\) and \(B\) be two \(n\times n\) matrices, with \(\|A+zB\| \geq \|A\|\) for all complex \(z\). Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for \(A\) to be orthogonal to \(B\). The special case of \(B=1\) can be applied to get some distance formulae for matrices. The problem when the norm \(\|\cdot\|\) is replaced by the Schatten \(p\)-norm is discussed. An extension of the statement on orthogonality to infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and a conjecture about orthogonality with respect to induced matrix norms are studied.
