Let \(D\) be a bounded strictly convex domain in the Euclidean \(n\)-space equipped with its Hilbert metric \(h(x,y)\). \textit{D. Hilbert} [Math. Ann. 46, 91-96 (1895; JFM 26.0540.02)] had noticed that the definition of Klein metric in terms of a cross-ratio produces a metric on any bounded convex domain \(\mathbb{R}^n\), and as there is no hyperbolic metric for a general domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) it is natural to ask wether the Hilbert metric might provide a suitable alternative to hyperbolic metric. In this paper, the author deals with one aspect of this issue; specifically, the author determines to what extent a certain kind of a double equality is, or is not, true for a bounded convex domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). In particular, it is shown that as the points \(x\) and \(y\) of \(D\) approach distinct points on the boundary of \(D\), for any \(a\) in \(D\) the sum \(h(x,a)+ h(a,x)\) is asymptotic to \(h(x,y)\).
