The paper deals with finite-dimensional representations of the symplectic Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}_n= {\mathfrak {sp}}(2n)\). A basis for any irreducible \({\mathfrak g}_n\)-module has been derived. The problem has a long history and has been addressed by many authors. Let \(V(\lambda)\) be an irreducible \({\mathfrak g}_n\)-module with highest weight \(\lambda\). Denote by \(V(\lambda)_\mu^+\) the subspace of \({\mathfrak g}_{n-1}\)-highest vectors of a given weight \(\mu\). The subspace \(V(\lambda)_\mu^+\) admits the structure of an irreducible representation of the twisted Yangian \(Y^-(2)\). To calculate the matrix elements of the generators of \({\mathfrak g}_n\) the author explicitly expresses the elements of \(Y^-(2)\), regarded as operators in \(V(\lambda)_\mu^+\), in terms of the Mickelsson raising and lowering operators.
